Through the Bible: JohnSample
Really Free
So Jesus said to those who believed in him, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” “If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free.
John 8:31-32, 36, (GNT)
In John 7-8, Jesus was misunderstood. His brothers misunderstood His timing. His listeners misunderstood His message. The Pharisees misunderstood His purpose. None understood that those who sin become its slave, which ultimately leads to death. Today is no different in that many are unknowingly enslaved to sin through the endless pursuit of power, pleasure, and people’s approval.
Thankfully, Jesus sets us free – ‘really free.’ How to get there? First, it is the Son who does it. We are free not by our own strength but by His grace. Second, we must obey His teaching. With the Spirit’s help, we soak in His word, fellowship with fellow believers, and make better choices each day. Over time, we will know the truth – that life in Christ is truly free.
Admittedly, it takes time. Yet, Jesus forgives our occasional lapses. John Newton, an ex-slave trader and writer of ‘Amazing Grace,’ said: ‘I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be…but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am.’
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for setting us REALLY free from sin. Each day, make us more like You! Amen.
About this Plan
As “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” the author was undoubtedly an eyewitness to Jesus’ ministry from the beginning. The book emphasises both the deity and humanity of Jesus, known as Logos, and “was made flesh” to come into the world to save mankind from sin. Reading this book will increase our faith, and by believing Jesus as the Son of God, we may have life in his name.
