In celebration of the United States Bicentennial, in 1976, President Gerald Ford gave a speech in Philadelphia, next to the Liberty Bell. Ford cited Leviticus 25, explaining that the inscription of the bell came from Leviticus 25:10 and also likening the celebrations in America to the Jubilee described in that passage!

Where have many commanders in chief turned to for inspiration, comfort, and direction at critical crossroads of American history? The Bible. American Presidents have frequently cited the Bible in inaugural addresses, State of the Union speeches, and beyond. These Bible verses have been used to call citizens to action, as inspiration to a country divided or at war, and sometimes as a comfort in times of national tragedy. This eight-day plan gives you a glimpse at different presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy, and how they incorporated the Bible into their speeches.
