The Genealogy of JesusSample

Like his father Isaac, Jacob was the prayed-for offspring of his parents. Jacob's name meant "Deceiver." The future did not seem bright for Jacob as he lived out his name's meaning in the deception of his twin brother and father.
Perhaps the most well-known story is when Jacob tricked Isaac into blessing him instead of Esau. As a result, Jacob fled to his uncle Laban where he accumulated four wives, twelve sons, and numerous possessions. After many years, Jacob and Esau were reunited. Despite Jacob's deception, God blessed him for the sake of His promise to Abraham. Through Jacob came the Twelve Tribes of Israel from whom descended the Messiah, Jesus Christ – the one who never deceived.
Jacob's story points towards the sovereignty of God to fulfill His purposes despite humanity's attempt at control. It is human nature to desire control and to know God's mind. His promise for a Savior came through a family line filled with deception. Jacob's life leaves us in awe at God working in broken and sinful people for the redemption of broken and sinful people.
Question 1: How have you been tempted to control life circumstances?
Question 2: What areas in your life do you need to surrender to God?
Prayer: God, thank you that there is nothing I can do to mess up Your plan. Thank You for Your sovereignty and that I can trust You.
About this Plan

We often trace our history to unlock knowledge about ourselves and gain wisdom to move forward. The divine nature of Jesus certainly adds a one-of-a-kind dynamic to understanding His genealogy. Still, there is wisdom, depth, and importance to be gained in learning about the men and women God ordained as part of the family of Jesus.
