Royals Part II: Divided Kingdom

DAY 21 OF 21

The High Places

If you’re anything like me, the circumstances of history are feeling quite repetitive at this point. King after king after king. Some of them good, some of them bad, but none of them quite reaching the standard. Each failing in their own way. It may not have been captured in all our readings, but there’s a repeated phrase throughout the stories of the kings. Each king fails to take down all the “high places” or the means of worshipping other gods.

Some kings remove some of them, other kings will build more, but not a single king successfully manages to remove them all. The same story is true in our lives. It can be a sad story as we make mistake, after mistake, after mistake. Some aren’t so bad, some are terrible and at times it can feel like we’re making no progress.

The reason we have a constant struggle with our sinful nature is that we never remove all the “high places”. Whenever we think we’ve addressed one, we start building another. We are set free from sin, but our sinful nature is always present. However, just because we keep making mistakes doesn’t mean we’re not making progress.

As long as we continue to choose to live by God’s Spirit and allow him to operate on our hearts, we’ll continue to see more and more “high places” removed from our lives and one day our hearts will be made completely new.

About this Plan

Royals Part II: Divided Kingdom

Tales of triumph and tragedy are seen in the books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. The history of Kings of Israel and Judah is a story of divine faithfulness despite human failure. These flawed rulers point us towards the one true faithful King. Part II covers Rehoboam through to Joash from Judah and Ahab from Israel.
