What If Jesus Forgave Like You?
Someone tweeted a thought on forgiveness that likely resulted in a heart check for all who read it. The tweet read:If Jesus based forgiving you on how much you forgive others, how forgiven would you be? Did you lose a little bit of air reading that? It’s okay if you did. Take a deep breath.
There is a lot to unpack within this question. It prompts you to stop and really assess your capacity for forgiveness. Beyond that, could you imagine if every time you needed Jesus to forgive you, He based it on the measure of grace you give to others when they need forgiving? For those who have a good grip on extending forgiveness, there’s nothing to worry about. The same cannot be said for those who've taken on a posture of unforgiveness.
Forgiveness is easier in theory than in practice. In our very human and imperfect nature, that is understandable, however, we must strive to practice forgiveness. It’s how we perpetuate the work of the Cross—the greatest example of forgiveness. It's also how we remain in good standing to qualify for forgiveness for it is written, “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”
Prayer: Father, thank You for being so gracious and lavishing me with forgiveness that I don't deserve. Soften my heart so that I can exercise compassion and kindness when others need it even when I think they don't deserve it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
