Praying for Trust in the Unknown

One of the most powerful opportunities we have to love our friends well is when they find themselves face to face with an opportunity to trust God with uncertainty in their lives.

Maybe they are going through a changing of season, a heartbreak, a diagnosis, or any other reality that forces them to choose whether they will walk forward full of fear, white-knuckling their way through the next step. Or will they walk forward full of faith? Trusting that God really is who He says He is?

We can encourage our friends to trust God with the unknown by reminding them of who God is in the midst of their circumstances. We can remind them that it is their choice to make great the giants of the unknown in their circumstances or fix their gaze on God, the author of their future and the friend.

As people who love God, we have the privilege of being the friend in their life who encourages faith-filled living by praying for the active renewing of their mind. We can pray that God would increase their will to keep their faith and trust in Jesus, rather than the uncertainty of their day.

In seasons of such uncertainty, we can pray that Isaiah 26:3 would become their reality instead. We can ask God to fan the flame of their confidence in Him as they trust Him with every tender layer and every unknown detail of their lives.

TRY THIS PRAYER:

God, You are the one who keeps us in perfect peace when we choose to trust you. Give __________________ (insert friend’s name here) the courage and the grace to trust You once more, taking every thought captive and making it obedient to Christ. Give them the strength to stay their mind on You, focused on how faithful You have been to them and confident of how faithful You will be in the future. Right now, I ask for favor and blessing on every logistic, desire, and diagnosis in their lives. Respond to their trust by revealing Your great love for them in the details of their lives. As they trust You with the people they love the most, give them the grace to release those people to Your care, You who knows more about the future than we could ever understand this side of heaven. Until heaven, God, increase our faith, hope, and love as we continue to choose trust instead of fear, and faith rather than control.
