Scripture
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Matthew 5:8
Summary
If you're looking at a breathtaking vista through filthy glasses, you'll have a hard time enjoying the view. Everything beautiful will be tainted, distorted, and obstructed by the dirt on your lenses. The same is true in our spiritual lives. If the eyes of our hearts have been tainted by impurity, we will have a hard time seeing God. That's why Jesus says that it's specifically the PURE in heart who will see God. We live in a world of impurity. Almost everything we look at online (social media, Netflix, movies, etc) has ungodliness and impurity baked in. We need to separate ourselves from the filth of this world so that our lenses are clean and we can see God clearly. The more we remove the impure obstructions to our vision, the more visible God will become in our lives. And when we see Him more clearly, we'll love Him more deeply.
Discussion Questions
1. Why do you think impurity is so damaging to our vision of God?
2. In what ways does media/culture push impurity into our lives?
3. Are there specific "mediums" of input that you think you need to cut out or clean up?
4. Any other thoughts, comments, ideas or questions you'd like to share?
Closing Prayer
Lord God, heal us. Make us pure. Forgive us for the impurity we've allowed into our lives. Show us how offensive it is to You, and how damaging it is to us. Keep us pure. May what we look at and what we think about always honor You. May we fall more in love with you, and delight in You above all else. Keep our eyes fixed upon you, Jesus. Give us the strength to live pure lives in an impure world. May we make you happy. In Jesus' name. Amen.
