Wisdom for Winning in LifeSample
Asking for One
While driving to lead a pregame chapel, I voiced a simple prayer: “Lord, will you bring one athlete who’s never attended chapel before?”
I arrived at our meeting place and waited. As several players from our local team huddled around, just before our start time an athlete came around the corner with a player who’d never attended a chapel before. A smile crept across my face. I’d prayed only fifteen minutes earlier, and already God had answered my request.
Then, as I bent down to pick up my Bible, through the doorway came five players from the opposing team. For two years our chaplain’s network had been praying that God would open doors on this specific team.
Later, the athlete next to me asked, “Are you the team chaplain?”
I nodded.
Leaning in, she asked how they could get one.
That moment marked the beginning of a life-changing ministry for that team.
As we see in the book of Luke, Jesus taught His disciples to pray simple and specific prayers. To keep asking and trusting Him to answer. Sometimes He answers in fifteen minutes, and other times it’s two years. Sometimes in His wisdom, it will be a “no.” But keep asking—for everyone who asks receives what’s best.
