KIDS: The Past, Present & Future of Following JesusSample
Who Am I?
Story
Have you ever played with a Rubik’s Cube? If you’ve never seen one, it’s a cube where you have to get the colors to match on all six sides. Most puzzle games are pretty straight forward: with mazes we need to find the right way out, with hidden pictures we have to find each object, and in classic puzzles we need to connect puzzle pieces together so the finished product looks like the picture on the box. But Rubik’s Cubes are different because they constantly change as we play with them.
It turns out that all of us are kind of like a Rubik’s Cube. We need to keep turning things over (thinking about stuff) to find the answer, even if the answer is simple. Throw in the fact that we change as we get older so the puzzle gets even more complicated!
Since we’re forever changing, we often ask the same big questions over and over and need to hear things in a different way in order for it to make sense. The big questions for today are: Who is Jesus, and who am I?
Bible
Have an adult read John 1:1–15 to you, or read it to them. This is a great passage for you to enjoy with someone else!
Think
If you’re reading this, it’s likely your parents have been bringing you to church for awhile now. Up until this point, it’s been enough to trust Jesus because your parents do. But as you get older, you’ll need to “turn over” who Jesus is for yourself. That’s why John 1:1–15 is really important. John 1 lets us know not only the importance of Jesus to all of creation, but also what that means for you. If you trust Jesus, that makes you a child of God.
When I was a kid, I loved to walk around my neighborhood during the holidays. When it started to get dark outside, I could see families enjoying dinner in their houses because of the brightness of their lights. I liked to wonder what it would be like to be a child in a family like the ones in the windows, since I didn’t have a big family.
When you become a child of God, you become a part of His family, and He treats you as His very own. The reason why Jesus is so important is because He is the One that made it possible for you to be part of His family. That’s why Christians are always talking about Him.
Do Something
Read the Gospel of John and look at the way people reacted to Him. People loved being around Him, but there were also people that were very angry with the things He said or did. Start asking why people reacted the way they did to Jesus. Since Jesus is so familiar to most of us in this country, we forget what He is like. Get reading!
