Beneath the Surface

DAY 4 OF 28

Did you know dolphins can't actually use their eyes underwater, but they can still "see," using what scientists call "echolocation?" Basically, dolphins make a series of little clicking noises that bounce off objects around them. Dolphins can interpret those sounds to get an idea of what the ocean around them looks like.

Sometimes, it can really feel like we're underwater. That's especially true when it comes to understanding God's will for our lives. We want a clear picture of who God wants us to be, but it feels murky and confusing.

Jesus' disciples felt the same way. When Jesus told them he was leaving them to go back to heaven, they got concerned. How would they know what to do without Jesus around? But Jesus reassured them that he would send them the Holy Spirit to help them understand truth.

Jesus makes that same promise to us today. When things around you don't look clear, or you have a hard time understanding how God is leading you, the Holy Spirit can guide you and give a clearer picture of the truth.

Without knowing what it is, echolocation just sounds like a bunch of clicks. And if you're not listening to the Holy Spirit, it may be hard to make sense of the wisdom you've been given. God promises to help us understand the Spirit, and will answer us when we pray for help. With God's help, the Holy Spirit can help us see ourselves and the world more clearly.

About this Plan

Beneath the Surface

Who do you think you are? You might define your identity around your skills, abilities, and giftings. Those are great ways to start our journey, but they don’t quite reach the center. In the same way, an oceanographer heads into the depths to reveal the ocean's mysteries, we’ll need to prepare to dive deep to discover who we are and who we are becoming.
