Discipling the Next GenerationSample
THE HEALTHY LEADER
Take a look at what Luke 10:38-42 says, and then continue with today's devotional.
"Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).
In today’s relentless pace of life, it is not difficult to become ensnared in doing things for Jesus that we inadvertently neglect the ultimate reward of being with Jesus. In this story we are reminded that there is a balance between action and devotion, sitting with Jesus and serving Jesus.
The reality is that you don’t have to choose one or the other. The Christian walk is an invitation to be with Jesus, and as we do that it leads us to action and service--to sit at His feet and respond in service to Him.
As leaders, the extent of our impact is connected to our intimacy with Jesus. As we spend time and worship Jesus, we are empowered and commissioned to serve. Serving then, becomes an extension of worship, not a substitute for worship.
Jesus tells Mary that being with Him is “what is better.” This reveals that the heart of Jesus is not just that we would accomplish great things for Him but that we would be with him.
Mark 3:14 (NIV) He [Jesus] appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach...
In the presence of Jesus, we receive guidance & wisdom, we are refreshed and transformed, and we become more like Him. It is at this point that we are best equipped to give to others what we have received. As you serve and lead, let your intimacy with Jesus be the “better” thing. Let your moments of sitting with Jesus fuel the fire to serve the next generation.
QUESTION TO ASK YOURSELF: How healthy is your personal relationship with Jesus?
