Becoming The Father God Wants You To Be

DAY 3 OF 5

The Right Strategy

Once you have identified the target and goal, implement the right strategy.

Fatherhood is not as complicated as some make it out to be. It is really just an extended game of follow the leader. To win, watch Jesus, go where He goes, and do what He does. Then, even if or when your children make their own mistakes or things don’t go as smoothly as you had hoped, you will have the peace and reassurance that come with knowing that you obeyed God. He will be responsible for the results at that point, not you.

So what do you do? Teach and show.

Teach your children what God’s Word says. Pack their bags with truth in anticipation of the challenging journey ahead of them. Do this intentionally and at every given opportunity. Review, quiz, apply. Not sure how? God will help you as you go if you stay tuned in to His voice. When He brings truth to mind, share it. Illustrate it. Explain it. Share your own successes and failures as appropriate, and pray that it all will sink in and take root.

Show your children what it looks like to live by the truth you are teaching them. Think out loud. Explain your choices as you allow God’s Word to guide you. Share the results of your obedience so they can witness God’s faithfulness to you and grow bold in their own faith. When you fail, show them what it means to repent, or turn away from sin. Show them how to confess sin to God, accept His forgiveness, and move on to better things so the Enemy won’t gain ground.

  • Are you making a sincere effort to learn what God’s will is so you can pass it on to your children?
  • Are you doing what God’s Word says so that your children can see what comes from obeying Him?

Read Deuteronomy 11:18-19, Ephesians 6:4, and James 1:21-22.

About this Plan

Becoming The Father God Wants You To Be

Children are a blessing from the Lord, no matter the circumstances surrounding their birth (Psalm 127:3).  If you are a father, thank God for it and decide right now that you are going to be what God wants you to be in your children’s lives, a visible, tangible illustration of Him, no matter what choices you’ve made to this point.  Being a good father really is not as complicated as you might think!  All you have to do is love your children like your Heavenly Father loves you.
