To Save America: The Ten Commandments

DAY 3 OF 10

Names are important. Names carry meaning. Names can carry power.

I’m sure you notice the numerous instances in the Bible in which God the Father or God the Son changed someone’s name in order to reflect a change in nature, character, or calling. God changed the names of Abram, Sarai, and Jacob, and in doing so changed the course of redemptive history. Jesus gave new names to Simon (Peter) and Saul (Paul). Yes, names are a big deal. And the biggest deal of all would be the name of God. So, it should not surprise us that the third command gives vital instructions as to how to handle it.

In Hebrew, the phrase translated “Do not take” (לא תשא[) from Exodus 20:7 actually means “Do not carry.” In other words, “Do not carry God’s name in vain.”

To carry God’s name in vain means, in part, to commit an act of evil “in the name of God.” That means someone doing something that is clearly evil or wrong while carrying God’s name.

Christian, have you considered the power of God's name? The name of the Lord, the Psalms repeatedly remind us, is great and greatly to be praised. The Bible gives us many names for the Lord. We know Him as King, Shepherd, Righteousness, and Peace, among many others. And as you get to know the name of the Lord, you will see its benefits in your personal life. We must be careful not to take it in vain.

If we would do our part to see America repent and come back to God, we need to see a nationwide return to the Ten Commandments. And a return to honoring the name of God. We can overcome and see victory through the blood of Jesus, victory through the power of Jesus' name, victory over sickness and disease, victory over the giants, victory over powers and principalities, and victory that comes through our Lord and Savior.

It’s time to go on the offensive and march forward to rescue our land out of darkness.
