THE DOVE

At his baptism, Jesus identifies himself with us, as one of us. Like most commands, entering the waters of baptism is an act where we follow Jesus and do what he did. Jesus’ baptism marks the beginning of his earthly ministry. After the Spirit descends upon him like a dove, Jesus is immediately led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted.

The dove is a symbol of love. At Jesus’ baptism, God the Father declares his love for Jesus before he’s done any ministry. The amazing news of the gospel is that when we put our faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection, we inherit his righteousness and his position of love. So when God looks at us, he doesn’t see our flaws but says, “This is my son or daughter—whom I love.” When you understand and feel the love of God for the first time or the tenth time, the Holy Spirit descends upon you like a dove.

Whenever you feel the love of God, the Spirit is at work. The Holy Spirit saves souls by illuminating the beautiful truth of God’s love and grace. He also matures us as disciples of Jesus by deepening our love for him day by day. As you discern the voice of the Holy Spirit, remember his voice is one of love. Remember, he is for you and works for your good.

In Ephesians 3:154-19 the apostle Paul got down on his knees and begged to the Holy Spirit for the Ephesians to understand the love of God. Don’t miss the significance of this passage. Paul is saying we can’t comprehend the depth of God’s love without the Holy Spirit!
As you read this passage I encourage you to get on your knees and pray: “Spirit, reveal to me the love of God – help me know it, and experience it. May it be truth on fire in my soul.”
