Titus: Displaying the Gospel of God's Grace

DAY 2 OF 6

Titus 1:5-9 expects much from our leaders. But it would be hypocritical to insist that our leaders embody what we do not personally prioritize. Sisters, we must believe that for churches to be healthy they need godly leaders who hold fast to the gospel. But we must also pursue godliness and hold fast to the same gospel our leaders preach and teach. Most of us lead in some capacity, whether in the church, a business, a small group, a community organization, with small children, or in some other way. So, one question we need to ask ourselves is, What kind of character do we exhibit as leaders? Are we displaying the attributes mentioned in the passage?

Think through the character qualities listed in Titus 1:6-9. Which of these most describes you? Which do you most need to grow in? What character qualities do you tend to look for most in those you follow, promote, or value?

While our culture screams for independence and cringes at the idea of submission, as Christians we have the opportunity to model joyful submission to Jesus by placing ourselves under the authority of godly leaders in local churches. This doesn’t mean we blindly follow what they say or never question their leadership decisions. Our leaders aren’t perfect, regardless of who they are. Instead, it means we commit to listening to their teaching and walking in obedience, as long as their instructions align with Scripture. Hebrews 13:17 (NLT) says, “Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.”

We benefit when we obey God’s instruction to follow godly leaders who have made it their aim to help us follow Jesus. If you are not currently a member of a local church, we hope you’ll see the value of being part of a community of believers committed to Christ and the gospel of grace. Through this study of Titus, we pray you’re growing in your understanding of and appreciation for leadership in the church. As we said, church leaders are not perfect, and they’re not meant to dominate, harm, or control us. But by God’s grace, most are very good and godly people, and we can look to them for spiritual nourishment, protection, and guidance.

Paul closes this section of his letter with the reminder that good church leaders are able to instruct the body in sound doctrine and rebuke those who contradict it. Think of your church leaders and a few ways you can encourage and support them this week. Thank God for them and pray that He will continue to bless their efforts to embody the character described in Titus 1:5-9.

About this Plan

Titus: Displaying the Gospel of God's Grace

In this 6-day Bible study, Courtney Doctor and Hunter Beless team up to explore Paul's letter to his friend Titus. You'll see the essential connection between right belief and right character and the way both testify to the goodness of the gospel. And you’ll be reminded that our world will be attracted to the gospel when they see its beauty displayed in us.
