Learning to Hear God's Voice

DAY 8 OF 10

If we want to hear God’s voice clearly, we need to learn God’s language. Think about a person who is employed as an interpreter for the United Nations. How does the interpreter know how to translate what a person is saying? They know because they have learned both languages! If we want to know whether it is God speaking, we have to learn His language – in other words, we have to get to know Him.

A heart posture of delighting in God is a key to learning His language and knowing Him better. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart”.

The word "delight" means to bubble over with the simplicity and affection of a child. You bubble over with delight and adoration of your Father, and He will take a desire that He has for you, and He will plant it in your heart. You become aware of it, and voice it back to Him as a petition.

This verse doesn’t mean that if we love God, we will get everything we want. Our focus is to have a heart that delights in who God is. In other words, our greatest desire is knowing and loving God, even more than hearing Him speak. Then, as we delight in Him, God takes desires from His heart and plants them into our hearts. It is not about the fulfilment of what originates in us, but rather about the awareness of desires which originate from our Father in Heaven.

The people who get in trouble "interpreting" the language of who is talking to them, are those who only ask God to speak when they want something. So, firstly, love the Word so that you recognize it. Saturate yourself with the language of Heaven. Secondly, live as a worshipper! Live your life as a son or daughter, affectionately bubbling over to your Father, and you won’t have to doubt what you hear.
