Reading With the People of God #15 Purpose

DAY 15 OF 31

Anchored Purpose in an Unpredictable Life

Ecclesiastes 9:1-12 paints a sobering picture: the same fate—death—comes to all, regardless of righteousness or wickedness. The Preacher observes that life under the sun is unpredictable and often unfair. Yet even in the face of death and uncertainty, he urges us to live fully and joyfully in the present, recognizing each moment as a gift from God.

Philippians 4 offers a beautiful contrast—not by denying life’s unpredictability, but by giving us an anchor in the midst of it. Paul speaks of peace that surpasses understanding, contentment in all circumstances, and joy that isn’t tied to what we have or what we face. His purpose is secure, not because life is predictable, but because Christ is faithful.

These readings together remind us that while we cannot control life, we can root our purpose in the One who does not change. In both joy and hardship, Christ is our peace, our strength, and our reason to rejoice.

Reflection Question:
Where are you tempted to seek peace through control, and how is God inviting you to find purpose through trust in Him instead?

Prayer of Illumination:
God of peace, as I read your Word today, quiet the noise of fear and striving in my heart. Teach me to live fully, love deeply, and trust you completely. Anchor my purpose not in certainty, but in your unshakable presence. Amen.

About this Plan

Reading With the People of God #15 Purpose

This is the fifteenth installment of our Bible reading plan, following a lectionary-style pattern with daily readings from the Psalms, Old Testament, and New Testament. Each day includes a devotional primer to guide your time in God’s Word. This month’s theme is purpose. In Ecclesiastes, we question what truly matters. Song of Songs reveals the purpose of love and relationships. Paul’s letters call us to live with clarity, identity, and mission in Christ. Together, these books invite us to discover God’s purpose—and how it shapes every part of our lives.
