Reading With the People of God #15 Purpose

DAY 3 OF 31

The Pursuit and the Promise

What’s the point of it all?

Ecclesiastes 2:1–11 is a raw, honest look at the pursuit of meaning. Pleasure, possessions, work, wealth—Solomon chased it all. And in the end, he calls it “vanity,” like chasing the wind. There’s a deep ache in these verses that echoes in every human heart: Is there more to life than this?

Enter Galatians 3.

Paul writes to people who are tempted to find purpose and blessing by doing more, earning more, and obeying harder. But he reminds them of a different path—a better promise. Christ became a curse for us (Gal. 3:13) so that we might receive the blessing of God, not through effort but through faith.

So as you read today, hold these two pictures side by side: the emptiness of life apart from God, and the fullness of life secured by His promise. Let the Spirit reframe your sense of purpose—not as something you achieve, but as something you receive.

Reflection Question:
Where in your life are you chasing purpose apart from Christ, and what might it look like to rest in His promise instead?

Prayer of Illumination:
Lord Jesus, we confess that we often seek meaning in things that cannot satisfy us. As we open your Word today, help us see clearly what is fleeting and what is eternal. By your Spirit, illuminate the truth of your promise. Let your blessing shape our purpose, and may we find joy in trusting you. Amen.

About this Plan

Reading With the People of God #15 Purpose

This is the fifteenth installment of our Bible reading plan, following a lectionary-style pattern with daily readings from the Psalms, Old Testament, and New Testament. Each day includes a devotional primer to guide your time in God’s Word. This month’s theme is purpose. In Ecclesiastes, we question what truly matters. Song of Songs reveals the purpose of love and relationships. Paul’s letters call us to live with clarity, identity, and mission in Christ. Together, these books invite us to discover God’s purpose—and how it shapes every part of our lives.
