God’s Strengthening Word: Mercy & ForgivenessSample

Introduction
Genesis 32:1–21: Today we begin reading the concluding chapters in the book of Genesis. In today’s reading Jacob is returning to the promised land with his family. He prepares to meet his brother Esau after years of being estranged. Fearing that Esau plans to attack him, Jacob sends his brother selected livestock in the hopes of appeasing him. (You may wish to read the earlier story about the brothers in Genesis 25:19–34 and 27:1–45.)
Today’s Key Verse: Genesis 32:20b GNT
Jacob was thinking, “I will win him over with the gifts, and when I meet him, perhaps he will forgive me.”
Reflect
What caused Jacob to be fearful about meeting his brother Esau? Why did he divide the people and the animals into two groups? What gifts did Jacob send in advance of the meeting? Is there someone with whom you need to be reconciled? If so, what are some steps you can take toward doing so?
Pray
Merciful God, when I have strayed from your presence, you are always ready to welcome and receive me. With a grateful heart, I thank you for the gift of your love and forgiveness. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Genesis 33:1–20: Jacob and Esau meet.
