Hope for the Hurting: For the Hurting: Encouragement for Suffering SeasonsSample

Job suffered incredible loss and had every reason to “curse God and die,” as his traumatized wife advised. This righteous man lost nearly everything–his wealth, servants, and, worst of all, his children. He responded with intense grief. Scripture says he got up, tore his robe and shaved his head in expressive mourning. Then he fell to the ground, maybe with his face in the dirt, and likely with tears streaming down his cheeks, and worshiped (Job 1:20).
He didn’t deny his emotions, pretend he didn’t hurt, or numb his pain with a religious platitude.
But in his grief, he turned to, rather than from, God. He continued seeking the Lord through chapters of “divine silence”, until, in Job 38, he experienced a direct encounter with God.
May we also learn to grieve honestly and authentically, but also, with hope, knowing one day we’ll encounter our Lord face-to-face and inexpressible joy will eradicate our pain for good.

About this Plan

When we are hurting or going through a difficult season, we might feel alone and abandoned. It might feel as if God isn't listening to our cries for help or that He doesn't care about our pain. Yet, throughout Scripture God communicates that He is with us, sees us, loves us deeply, empathizes with our pain, and still has good plans for us. He invites us to draw close to Him in times of hardship, receive His comfort, and hold tight to His unchanging truth.
