Pain to Peace: A Man's Path Past Pitfalls

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: The Performance Trap - When "Good Enough" Never Is

Scripture: Luke 10:41-42 (NIV)
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Here's the thing about performance—it's addicting for the male ego. We get hooked on the rush of achievement, the next promotion, the bigger ministry, the perfect dad performance. I should know. I spent years believing my worth as a pastor was measured by attendance numbers and how well my sermons landed. Then life threw me a curveball at 52—a heart attack that flat-lined my performance obsession real quick.

Lying in that hospital bed, wired up like a Christmas tree, I realized I'd been living like Martha—frantic, worried, and completely missing the point. Jesus wasn't impressed by my 60-hour weeks or my ability to juggle seventeen church committees. He wanted me to sit down, shut up, and just be with Him like Mary did. That's harder than it sounds for guys like us who've been conditioned to prove our worth through productivity.

Here's what cracked me up (in a painful way): I was so busy performing for God that I forgot He already loves me. Colossians 3:1-2 isn't a suggestion—it's an invitation to stop the hamster wheel and remember we're already raised with Christ. Our identity isn't our last quarterly review or how many people showed up to hear us speak. It's found in Him, period.

I know a guy—let's call him Steve—who ran himself into the ground trying to be the perfect everything. Perfect sales manager, perfect church elder, perfect husband. The man was juggling more balls than a circus performer until he literally collapsed during a client presentation. His wake-up call came when his eight-year-old asked his wife, "Why is Daddy always angry?" That's when Steve learned the difference between working for God and working with God.

Your Move: Find ten minutes today—I'm serious, set a timer—and sit quietly with Jesus. No agenda, no prayer list, no spiritual performance. Just sit there and let Him love you. Ask Him where you're striving instead of resting, then pick one thing you can let go of this week. Trust me, the world won't end if you're not perfect at everything.

About this Plan

Pain to Peace: A Man's Path Past Pitfalls

I've stepped in enough potholes to know they're everywhere—especially the ones that look like success. This isn't your typical devotional with churchy language. It's a raw, honest look at the four traps that snare good men: performance, passion, position, and possessions. Stop chasing the wrong things. Each day includes real Scripture, honest insights, and practical steps that work in the real world. This isn't about becoming perfect—it's about becoming free. No religious jargon, just biblical truth with the honesty of a guy who's been there. Bobby Bressman- bobby@griefbites.org
