Pain to Peace: A Man's Path Past Pitfalls

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: The Position Trap - Climbing Ladders That Lean Against the Wrong Wall

Scripture: Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Let's be honest—men love status. We love titles, corner offices, being the guy people come to for answers. There's nothing inherently wrong with leadership or success, but when we start chasing position for position's sake, we've lost the plot. I've seen good men destroy relationships, compromise their integrity, and abandon their families all for a chance to climb one rung higher on a ladder that ultimately leads nowhere.

As a pastor, I had to wrestle with this demon personally. Part of me wanted the biggest church, the most influence, the recognition that comes with "success" in ministry. But Jesus had some pretty harsh words for religious leaders who loved their titles more than their calling. The Pharisees were all about the front row seats and fancy robes, but they missed the whole point of serving God.

Here's what I've learned: real influence comes from serving, not positioning. The men I respect most aren't the ones with the biggest titles—they're the ones who show up when life gets messy, who put others first, who lead by example instead of by authority. Position without character is just a house of cards waiting to fall.

I know a lawyer who spent fifteen years chasing a partnership at his firm. Worked insane hours, networked like crazy, played all the political games. His marriage suffered, his kids barely knew him, and his faith became Sunday-only window dressing. He never made partner, but he learned something better—that significance comes from investing in people, not climbing corporate ladders. Now he mentors young attorneys and coaches little league. He's happier than he's ever been.

Your Move: Think about where you're currently chasing status or position. Maybe it's at work, maybe it's at church, maybe it's in your community. Memorize Philippians 2:3-4 and ask God to show you where pride is driving your ambition. Then do something today that serves someone else without any possibility of recognition or advancement for you.

About this Plan

Pain to Peace: A Man's Path Past Pitfalls

I've stepped in enough potholes to know they're everywhere—especially the ones that look like success. This isn't your typical devotional with churchy language. It's a raw, honest look at the four traps that snare good men: performance, passion, position, and possessions. Stop chasing the wrong things. Each day includes real Scripture, honest insights, and practical steps that work in the real world. This isn't about becoming perfect—it's about becoming free. No religious jargon, just biblical truth with the honesty of a guy who's been there. Bobby Bressman- bobby@griefbites.org
