What’s your job?

I often receive prayer requests from people asking me to pray for them because they feel called to full-time ministry.

As much as I honour and applaud the desire to serve God wholeheartedly and full-time, the feeling I get from many Christians is that they see ministry life as a higher calling than working a "regular" job. As if God ranks pastoring above project managing, or worship leading above waitressing.

That’s not a Biblical idea at all.

Before Yeshua Ministries became a full-time commitment for me, I worked in corporate jobs for almost 15 years, first in call centres and later managing several branches of a large music store.

I loved it!

Even Paul had an occupation apart from being possibly the greatest apostle in history. He was a tent-maker, not a pastor (Acts 18:3).

In the parable of The Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), Jesus emphasises the reward that comes from diligent work. The master praises the servants who have worked hard and earned him money; they are then given responsibility over even more.

Even in the very beginning, in the Garden of Eden, God created humans for a specific purpose:

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. – Genesis 2:15 NIV

Work has meaning and significance in and of itself; it's not just a means to an end!

And there is no hierarchy of professions. There is no secular vs. sacred. What's the work you're doing that's most important to God? All of it. Mopping floors and cleaning toilets count just as much as practising law or being a homemaker.

No work is too lowly to be used to glorify God.
