When You Wonder Why

DAY 15 OF 30

God’s Design for Marriage

God designed marriage. And it’s beautiful.

God’s plan for uniting husband and wife goes back to the garden, the beginning of creation. God formed Adam, the first man, from the dust of the ground and surrounded him with good things. But he was alone, and the Bible says there wasn’t a suitable helper for him. So God made Eve, a woman, from the rib of the man and brought her to him. She was perfect for Adam. And God gave them a shared purpose: to be fruitful and multiply.

Adam and Eve were created to enjoy each other and be intimate with each other relationally and physically. They were called to care for each other, the family they created and the world around them. Most importantly, they were made to image God, each created differently to display his likeness to the world around them.

God sees marriage as important. In Ephesians 5, we see the marriage of a man and a woman compared to the union between Jesus Christ and his bride, the church. This relationship displays God’s never-ending commitment to love and serve us. God chose the example of marriage on purpose. Marriage involves two people, distinct in their genders, male and female. Like marriage, Christ and his bride are different, yet complementary, lovingly joined together forever.

Marriage is a lifelong commitment and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you’re in a relationship you can’t see leading to marriage, ask yourself why you’re in the relationship. Although it can be easy to stick to what feels comfortable, God may have someone different and better suited for your life. Marrying someone who loves God and shares your same values and morals is important.

Lastly, maybe you’re unsure if marriage is in your future. Know this: being single does not make you any less of a person or a Christian than someone who’s in a marriage or dating relationship. You don’t have to be married to be used by God. Consider asking God how you can use your gifts and passions to glorify him both now and as you look into the future, whether or not you get married. Ask yourself how he can be glorified as you pursue an education, passion or a career, and then ask to be made into the person he wants you to be, one that reflects who he is in all that you do.

About this Plan

When You Wonder Why

Life comes with tough questions about who you are, why you’re here, and where God fits into it all. Over 30 days, you’ll bring your questions to God and discover that he isn’t afraid of them. Each day explores real-life topics like identity, mental health, relationships, and purpose, connecting the Bible’s timeless truth to your everyday struggles. With a balance of biblical context and practical application, each day makes God’s Word approachable, personal, and relevant. This 30-day reading plan is based on content from OneHope’s NIV The Telos Bible, published by Zondervan.
