God's Design for MenSample

Serving Men
An easy way to test a man’s character is to give him a menial task that no one will notice.
Just to skip ahead to the end, the correct response is to do it wholeheartedly without complaining.
I once saw a man throw a minor fit at church over being asked to help with the dishes after a church lunch. I’m not sure what else was happening in him that day, but he clearly felt that this task was beneath him, and he was unwilling to serve his brothers and sisters at the church in that way.
In today’s verses, Jesus teaches that “the way of the world” is that we naturally tend to want to “lord it” over others, but that men of the Kingdom are to take the opposite route. We like the noble tasks and the positions of honor, but they aren’t to be our focus.
If you want to be a great man in this Kingdom, you take the lowliest place and do the lowliest jobs. Nothing is “beneath” you; the mark of a godly man is his willingness to serve others sacrificially.
Jesus, the perfect Man, was God Himself and nonetheless lived His life putting others first and choosing the humblest places to live and serve (Philippians 2:1-11). He even stripped down to a servant’s outfit and washed His disciples' feet, the lowliest task of all household tasks, reserved for the lowest servant in the home (John 13:1-17).
There was no act of service too lowly for our King of kings. If He wasn’t too good for it, then no man is too good for it.
Men are at their best when they lay aside their pride and actively serve others, discard the need for credit or applause, and take on the humblest tasks and hardest roles, not because they necessarily like it, but because Jesus did it, calls us to it, and it is the right thing to do.
God’s design for men is that we would follow the example of Christ, humbling ourselves in the service of others and putting them before ourselves. We are just like Jesus when we do.
Prayer: Father, thank You for calling me Your servant and giving me the opportunity to serve You and others! May my service be joyful to me and a blessing to those I serve. Amen.
Reflection: Where are you currently serving other people in your life? What is something you could do today to go and serve somebody in need?
About this Plan

The term "toxic masculinity" has been used to call out men's sinful behavior, but it doesn’t inspire men to greater things. We need a vision of masculinity that is good, biblical, and Christ-like—God’s ideal design for men, all that He wanted them to be when He created them as men on purpose. Jesus, the perfect Man, shows us a perfect picture of what masculinity was meant for. God’s Son shows us what men should be aiming at, and God’s Word shows us how to get there in this 30-day devotional! Written by Chris Walker.
