What Happened to Us in Eden? - Psychology of the FallSample

WHERE DOES EDEN LEAD US TODAY?
There are, of course, countless more reflections we could make about what happened in Eden. But the space of a 30-day devotional sets clear limits.
Let this serve as an appetizer—a starting point—for understanding that the Eden narratives, together with other biblical texts about men and women and their relationships with each other and with God, are not secondary or minor themes in our grasp of Scripture or theology. On the contrary, they are a main course. They speak to issues we cannot afford to dismiss as irrelevant:
- They reveal the very character of God (nothing less!).
- They show His original design for us as stewards, entrusted with the governance of His creation.
- They point us toward our eschatological future in Christ, where all—redeemed men and women together—are the Bride of the Lamb.
- They highlight the redemption God has given us, which is no different for men or women. But our understanding of that redemption does depend on how we read the passages we’ve explored—and many others we have not had time to cover here.
These are just some of the vital truths that help us see the weight of what’s at stake. Anyone who still thinks the “woman issue” is second-order has misunderstood all of this. More than that, they’ve failed to realize that there is no such thing as a stand-alone “woman issue.” To speak of woman is unavoidably to speak of man—and of humanity itself. That’s the only way it can be.
We are that interconnected. And what light these details shed on things like love and respect—realities that have been misunderstood for centuries!
- How could men not be reminded to love and care for the one given to them as a gift? This applies not only to husbands toward their wives. Woman, in general, is a gift to man, in general. And we are called to be guardians of one another before God, not only within marriage.
- And how could women not be reminded to respect? After all, Eve once chose to go her own way—and since the Fall, with domination in play, the easy response has been to lash out in aggression against the wounds inflicted. But let us not, as women, use the same weapons of injustice that we have long denounced and criticized in men.
The example of Christ always calls us to something better. May God’s truth, justice, and—above all—love shine through us, women and men together, for His glory and as a blessing to the watching world.

About this Plan

What happened in Eden has shaped us all. From joy in the Creator’s presence to the collapse that brought death—still felt and passed down until He comes. The principles of Creation reveal God’s character and His mind. And when we look at the first man and woman, we also see ourselves more clearly. As both a psychologist and a follower of Christ, I find this deeply moving. So I invite you to join me in returning to Eden, to reflect on what truly happened there—and what it means for us today.
