God-sized Dreams for a Lifetime

We’ve talked about it before, but it’s worth saying again as we reach the end of this journey: God loves messy people.

The wild ones.

The kind we might pass by.

David—the murderer and adulterer.

Peter—the fisherman with rough edges.

Rahab—the lady of the night who found the light.

It doesn’t make any sense to us. We would pick the ones who have it all together. The ones who didn’t cause such a scene. The ones who played by the rules.

So what do the people God chooses have in common?

They don’t quit.

The mistakes they make are astounding.

The baggage they carry could fill a huge truck.

The stunts they pull would get most of us fired.

But they never stop.

They fall down and get back up.

They say the wrong thing and then repent.

They fail and stubbornly press forward anyway.

That is the one thing you must not do on the way to your God-sized dream: you must not quit. When you really get down to it, that’s all God requires.

And not quitting doesn’t mean not giving up on your dream. Sometimes you will realize you have been chasing entirely the wrong one and the wisest thing you can do is stop. What I mean is that you never quit pursuing Jesus.

You never quit saying yes when he asks you to do something crazy.

You never quit letting him teach you through your mistakes.

You never quit giving it one more try, even when you’re scared silly.

That is what brings God joy, my friend. Not when you’re “perfect” on the outside. Not when you have a tidy existence. Not when you get it right the first time.

Nope, God loves it when you will stop at nothing to have more of him in your life. That’s really what God-sized dreams are all about anyway. I hope you know that by now, our dreams are really just ways that we chase the One who has been pursuing our hearts even before we were born.

The ultimate goal is not an outcome. It’s an outpouring of more of Jesus in our lives. It’s experiencing intimacy with him in ways we never have before. It’s learning, growing, and letting him transform us from the inside out.

Just this morning, I got up to write, and an email caught me off guard. Before I knew it, instead of having lofty thoughts to put on the page, I was fighting the urge to think unprintable words. And then the accusations kicked in: “Who are you to even talk about this when you’re such a mess?” Ever heard that too? I imagine you have—we all do. But the answer is that God has never been afraid to use messy people.

So I said, “God, I need a do-over. Forgive me and help me start again.” Then I sat down at the keyboard one more time.

That’s what we’re all to do. God has taken care of your sins, failures, and mistakes on the cross. Those aren’t the biggest obstacles in your God-sized dream anymore. What’s far more dangerous is letting those things convince you that you should quit because you’ll never be worthy.

Don’t listen to that lie. Not today. Not ever.

You’re not a quitter.

You’re more than a conqueror.

You’re also a God-sized dreamer.

Messy, beautiful, broken, and whole.

The only kind God uses.

And he’s going to use you beyond what you can even imagine.
