Main Course
Zacchaeus was a wealthy tax collector, despised by his community. Yet despite his reputation, he was determined to see Jesus. Being short, he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to get a better view (Luke 19:1–4). Seeking Jesus often requires effort and humility - a willingness to move beyond pride or fear of what others think.
When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up and called him by name: “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today” (Luke 19:5 NIV). In that moment, Zacchaeus discovered that while he was seeking Jesus, Jesus had been seeking him.
The crowd muttered in disapproval that Jesus would be the guest of a sinner (Luke 19:7). But Jesus was never bound by social opinion. He came for those considered unworthy, and Zacchaeus’ life became a testimony of that truth.
In response, Zacchaeus declared,“Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount” (Luke 19:8 NIV). His encounter with Jesus moved him from greed to generosity, from selfish gain to restitution. Jesus affirmed his transformation:“Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:9–10 NIV).
Zacchaeus’ story reminds us that seeking Jesus never ends in disappointment. He meets us in our searching, calls us by name, and changes our lives from the inside out. As the prophet Jeremiah wrote:“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13 NIV).
If you’re hungry to see Jesus more clearly, take courage—He is already seeking you.
