God Is My Shepherd

David starts this psalm with a declaration, not a question. He doesn’t say, “I hope the Lord is my shepherd.” He says, “The Lord is my shepherd.” That’s personal. Not just a shepherd, not just Israel’s shepherd — my shepherd.

And because the Lord is his shepherd, David makes this bold statement: “I shall not want.” In other words, “There’s no lack in my life that God, as my Shepherd, won’t cover.” A shepherd’s role is to guide, protect, and provide for the sheep. Sheep don’t have to figure it all out — they just have to follow.

This verse is a reminder that God is not distant; He is present, leading us with care and intention. Where the Shepherd leads, provision follows. Where the Shepherd is, lack cannot stay.

I’ve been in seasons where I thought I was lacking, but God proved otherwise. He guided me, protected me, and made sure I had what was necessary for the journey. The enemy (the devil) would have loved for me to continue to think of myself in a place of lack. If he can make you think you are lacking, then you wouldn't walk fully into what God has called and created you to do.

Make it personal: He’s not just the Shepherd, He’s your Shepherd. You don’t have to carry the weight of provision — that’s the Shepherd’s job. Declare today: “Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing.” Write it somewhere visible and repeat it when fear of lack rises. Trust His leading, even when you don’t see the pasture yet.
