Man vs. Temptation: A Men's DevotionalSample

When Paul was Tempted
Aside from our Lord and Savior, I admire no other man as much as Paul the Apostle.
Paul faced beatings and danger on a daily basis. He also carried the weight of anxiety for all the churches, ensuring they remained faithful to the original Gospel and did not adopt false teachings (2 Corinthians 11:16-33). Moreover, he bore the guilt of having once persecuted the Church himself. However, similar to Peter, Paul had experienced his own "Come-to-Jesus" moment, where he surrendered his guilt and shame and reconciled with his Master (Acts 9:1-19).
Today’s verse discusses the "thorn” in Paul’s flesh, the meaning of which remains a mystery. We don’t know for certain what this thorn was, and Paul does not specify. Possible interpretations include an eye disease, epilepsy, a difficult person, or a literal demon.
Regardless of its nature, Paul pleaded with God on multiple occasions to remove the thorn. However, God did not grant Paul’s request. Despite this, Paul believed God was using this trial to help him develop a stronger character.
Paul faced numerous temptations throughout his life. He struggled with the temptation of pride, considering his status and achievements. He also felt the shame of having once persecuted the very believers he was now leading. Additionally, he was tempted to walk away from the pain and suffering that came with leading a church that, at times, was divided over trivial issues.
So, why did Paul continue to run a good race and remain faithful until the end?
I believe the answer lies in the grace that filled him. It’s hard to explain how a man who endured so much suffering could also experience such joy. He embraced the principle that suffering leads to perseverance, perseverance builds character, and character ultimately fosters hope in our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:3-5).
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we ask for your guidance as we seek to learn from your faithful servants, such as the Apostle Paul. Despite facing immense challenges, imprisonment, and persecution, he maintained a spirit of joy and unwavering hope. Help us to embrace this same resilience in our own lives, drawing strength from his example as we navigate through our struggles and trials. Amen.
Reflection: How do you respond when faced with pain and suffering in your life? How might you respond in the spirit of some of the men we have looked at this week?
