Healing, community, and unexpected joy
June 13, 2017, changed my life forever. My beloved mother was the victim of an armed robbery in her own driveway. The robber forced her into the house at gunpoint, stole $80 from her purse, and then noticed my father—who was nearly deaf—sleeping. He said, “I’m going to rob the old man too.” My brave mother responded, “No you’re not! You got what you wanted—get out of my house!” And he left.
That night, my mother was taken to the ER with chest pain. Though tests showed no blockages, she was diagnosed with “Broken Heart Syndrome.” Five weeks later, she passed away. The emotional trauma had taken its toll on her heart.
My father had several chronic illnesses, and with Mom gone, I became his full-time caregiver while juggling a full-time job, managing my own home, and making nine court appearances in pursuit of justice—her death was ruled a homicide.
By June 2018, I hit rock bottom. I was emotionally drained and barely hanging on. I masked my pain from family, pushing it down to keep going. Then one day, my grandson Hayden picked up a pool cue and said, “Amma, can you show me how to shoot a ball?” We played for fun, but something clicked—he had a natural talent. My husband, Mike, started working with him and quickly saw that Hayden had a God-given stroke.
I had no idea that pool would be the start of my healing. Hayden joined a league and began playing in tournaments within six months. Watching him thrive brought joy and purpose back into my life. God had clearly redirected my focus toward something life-giving.
As Hayden’s passion and skills grew, I prayed that God would guide his path. Not long after, I received an email from Chris Curtis, founder of Cues4Christ and Level Up Junior Billiards. He had seen a video of Hayden and wanted him to become an ambassador. It felt like another answer to prayer.
Today, Hayden is proudly representing Cues4Christ and Level Up. At just 14, he’s racked up numerous achievements and has represented Team USA at the Junior World Tournament for three years. Our family has traveled across the country for his competitions. Though I don’t play, I’ve grown to love the sport deeply. I've learned the strategy, precision, endurance, and mental strength it requires.
Pool has brought healing, community, and unexpected joy. On hard days, I head to the pool hall, where I’ve found a supportive “pool family.” More importantly, I see each visit as an opportunity to share God’s love where it’s least expected. I never imagined a pool hall could become a place of ministry.
Recently, I was honored to be named Prayer Coordinator for Cues4Christ—a role I joyfully accepted. Romans 8:28 (NIV) sums up my journey: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” God truly turned my pain into purpose.
