Hearing God Through the Christmas Story

DAY 1 OF 5

Mary — Hearing God When You’re Ordinary

Mary was just a teenage girl in a small, quiet town. No influence, no platform, no extraordinary resume—just a life of ordinary days and faithful routines. And then the angel, Gabriel, appeared. Suddenly, Mary’s world shifted in a way she could never have planned: she was chosen to carry the Savior of the world. Imagine the weight of that moment—confusion, fear, disbelief, and awe all wrapped together.

While Mary didn’t completely understand the plan, her response was radical, filled with trust, courage, and humility: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” Mary teaches us that God’s voice often comes to ordinary people in the middle of ordinary life, inviting us into extraordinary purposes.

Hearing from God doesn’t always come with full understanding or comfort. It can be unsettling, even intimidating. But faith is not about having all the answers; it’s about trusting God’s plan and being willing to respond. Mary’s “yes” changed history, but it also transformed her heart, showing that God’s calling comes with both challenge and deep growth.

In our own lives, God might be calling us to say yes to something unexpected: starting a difficult conversation, stepping into a leadership role, or taking a leap of faith that scares us. Mary shows that even in uncertainty, God’s voice can guide, strengthen, and empower us. Ordinary lives can become extraordinary when we listen and respond with trust.

Reflect: Where might God be inviting you to step into something unexpected?
Prayer: Creator of the Universe, who draws close to us, help me respond to your voice with faith and courage, even when I don’t fully understand.

About this Plan

Hearing God Through the Christmas Story

We all want to hear from God. But sometimes, it’s hard to know what that means or how to listen. In the Christmas story, God spoke to ordinary people through dreams, angels, Scripture, and the quiet stirrings of the Spirit. Each one had to decide how to respond. Over five days, we’ll look at how Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and others heard from God, and what that can teach us about hearing and following him in our everyday lives today.
