Hearing God Through the Christmas StorySample

Joseph — Hearing God in Confusion
Joseph had a plan. He had a respectable fiancée and a life that seemed predictable and secure. Then, everything fell apart: Mary was pregnant, and it wasn’t his child. This was more than confusing—it was potentially life-shattering. In the middle of this turmoil, an angel from God spoke to him in a dream: “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.”
God often speaks when life feels messy or uncertain. He doesn’t always give the full picture; sometimes, he provides just enough clarity for the next step. Joseph’s response—obedience and trust despite fear and confusion—reveals a key truth: hearing God isn’t about understanding everything; it’s about moving forward in faith.
Joseph teaches us how to navigate moments of doubt, fear, or unexpected change. Following God may require us to adjust plans, let go of control, or step into uncertainty. We might even have to endure others making unjust assumptions or having false ideas about us. But God’s voice is steady, guiding us toward peace and purpose even when circumstances feel overwhelming or unfair.
For us today, Joseph’s story is a reminder that obedience in confusion is a form of courage. We don’t need to have it all figured out before we step forward. God meets us in the unknown and gives us the wisdom, strength, and grace to act faithfully, transforming both our lives and the lives of those around us.
Reflect: Where is life confusing right now? Is there anything causing you fear?
Prayer: Dream giver, help me hear your voice and obey, especially when I need courage to trust your plan.

About this Plan

We all want to hear from God. But sometimes, it’s hard to know what that means or how to listen. In the Christmas story, God spoke to ordinary people through dreams, angels, Scripture, and the quiet stirrings of the Spirit. Each one had to decide how to respond. Over five days, we’ll look at how Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and others heard from God, and what that can teach us about hearing and following him in our everyday lives today.
