Work to Serve and Witness
As we consider working to benefit Others, let’s lift our eyes to Jesus as our perfect example. He served with the heart of a King and ruled with the heart of a servant. Jesus not only demonstrated how to serve but gave us specific instructions: go the extra mile, even for oppressive authorities who are taking advantage of you, and wash people’s feet, even if you’re the boss.
Paul tells us in Philippians 2:3–4 to do nothing out of selfishness or arrogance, but rather to humbly value and serve others, looking out for their best interests above our own. What’s more, refusing to grumble and argue makes us shine like bright stars in a dark world (Philippians 2:14–15). When we live and work like this, teams flourish and positive company culture is created. Believe it or not, people definitely notice when we don’t complain. We’re called to serve with integrity and honesty, being authentic and loving, working as if we’re ultimately working for God, not for our bosses.
We work to serve, and we also work to witness. Before Jesus was taken up into heaven after the resurrection, He told His disciples, ‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ (Acts 1:8 NIV) The ends of the earth includes your place of work.
Living a life that demonstrates faith is far more powerful than just talking about it. We’re called to fully engage in our workplace and be a positive part of the community and culture. If we’re the problem (arriving late, whinging about everything, or slacking off) no one will be interested to hear about what we believe. If we work hard, with excellence, servant-heartedness, integrity, and passion, people will ask us why. It’s a relief to know God is far more interested in saving the lost than we are, and He is the One who moves people’s hearts to repentance. We simply need to be aware of Him: prayerful throughout our working day, on the lookout for what He’s doing in our workplace mission fields, and ready to tell people – gently and respectfully – about why we’re filled with hope.
It’s a remarkable truth that our transformed lives are evident to those we work with. People are watching. Let’s look for opportunities to serve at work by going the extra mile or doing the thankless task that needs doing. Your Heavenly Father sees, and so do those around you. Ask God to fill your workplace with His presence and be ready to demonstrate His love for the lost.
