Work It Out
Let’s recap what we’ve read over the past four days: we’ve explored the truth that God is very interested in the work we do, and we considered three focus areas – Us, Others, and Him – as they pertain to our work. These represent the key relationships that shape how we work: our own provision and personal growth, the way we actively serve and witness to others, and how our work aligns with God in creative expression and ultimately in worship.
Thankfully, God has plans for our lives, and He has everything under control. Regardless of what we plan or what’s happening at work and elsewhere, God is on the throne. Proverbs 16:9 reads, ‘In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.’ (NIV) You may want to spend some time thanking God for the way He has established your steps as you’ve looked for work or pursued a career, even if the career path God has taken you on hasn’t been what you pictured it would be.
Micah 6:8 reads, ‘He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’ (NIV) This is what God requires of us at work and elsewhere. We do this by ‘paying a P.R.I.C.E.’ The acronym stands for Pray, Renew, Invite, Commit, and Expect.
Pray – talk to God about the things you’ve learned through this reading plan. Renew your commitment to God and choose to surrender again to His will and purposes. Invite God to show up in your workplace and impact your business situations and relationships. Commit to spending a bit of time with God each day, praying and reading the Bible. And finally, expect to find God’s hand in the work you do. You’ve invited Him in, and He will be working in and through you. Expect His presence, His favour, His guidance, and His opportunities.
May you begin to embed these simple actions in the rhythms of your workweek, and as you do so, may you be encouraged by the truth that God cares deeply about the work you do. He’s not just the God of Sunday. Monday matters! May you find a new sense of purpose and a fresh revelation of how God will use you to minister in the marketplace, impacting others, glorifying Him, and maybe even changing the world.
