Self-Inflicted Wounds

DAY 1 OF 5

When I Became My Own Enemy

No one prepared me for the kind of pain I could cause myself. It’s easy to point to others, “They hurt me,” “They misunderstood me,” but there came a moment when I had to admit that some of my wounds were self-inflicted.

I overcommitted when God said rest. I held grudges when He said Forgive. I chased applause when He said, “Be still.” I said yes to things He never asked me to do, all in the name of being “faithful.”

The hardest part of healing is facing your own reflection, admitting that your pain didn’t just come from people, but from the choices you made while ignoring the voice of the One who loves you most.

But grace doesn’t shame you for it. Grace looks you in the eyes and says, “Let’s start again.”

God is not here to punish you. He’s here to restore you. The same hands that discipline are the hands that heal.

Reflection

What ways have I caused my own pain through choices that ignored God’s guidance?
How can I start to release guilt and accept God’s grace today?

Action Step

Take 5–10 minutes to journal one area where you’ve been your own enemy and invite God to restore that part of your heart.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I wounded myself by walking outside Your will. Heal me from self-sabotage and teach me to obey quickly, humbly, and fully. Amen.

About this Plan

Self-Inflicted Wounds

Sometimes the deepest wounds in ministry are the ones we inflict on ourselves. In this 5-day devotional, worship leaders, psalmists, worship team members, musicians, and creatives are invited to confront patterns of overwork, perfectionism, and self-imposed pressure that can quietly erode the soul. Through Scripture, reflection, and practical steps, Self-Inflicted Wounds guides you toward self-awareness, grace, and God-centered healing. You’ll learn how to release guilt, extend compassion to yourself, and reclaim joy in worship, so that your service flows from freedom and not from fear or obligation.
