Jonah

DAY 1 OF 6

When God Calls Imperfect People

Before you read Jonah’s opening verses, pause and consider this:

Calling rarely begins with confidence. It begins with a real person in a real moment—often uncertain, hesitant, or afraid.

In Jonah 1:1-3, Jonah hears God clearly…but his instinct is to run. Rather than villainize Jonah, try to read him as someone not so different from you. He doesn’t misunderstand God’s voice. He simply doesn’t want the assignment. He doesn’t feel ready. He doesn’t feel willing.

Psalm 139:7–10 offers a crucial backdrop: even when we flee inwardly or outwardly, God’s presence goes with us. Jonah will try to outrun God, but the psalm quietly reminds you—you can’t escape God’s reach, and that’s good news.

As you enter this reading, pay attention to the emotional gap between God’s call and Jonah’s response. Let that tension draw you into your own story: Where do you sense God nudging you? And where are you tempted to flee?

What to look for in the reading: Watch how Jonah reacts to God’s clarity, and let Psalm 139 frame God’s relentless presence.

Reflection

  1. As you read today's passages, what part of Jonah’s response feels uncomfortably familiar?
  2. Where did you sense God’s presence in the psalm—especially in places you tend to withdraw?

Application

Name one place in your life—quietly before God—where you’re resisting His leading.
