Prayer & Fasting

DAY 4 OF 7

In this passage, Jesus tells a story of two sons who are both given a direct command by their father. The first son’s immediate reaction is defiance; he refuses to submit to his father’s will. But later, his heart softens, and he obeys. The second son responds quickly with a “yes,” but he never follows through on what he said he would do.

Jesus then asks a simple question: “Which of the two did the will of his father?” The answer may seem obvious to the reader, but do we treat it as obvious in our lives and actually obey? In this parable, Jesus reminds us that God desires surrendered lives, not just words of surrender. Faithful obedience isn’t found in what we say; it’s revealed in what we do. And that truth is convicting when we apply it to our daily walk with the Lord.

Through prayer and fasting, as we quiet our hearts to hear God’s voice, this parable invites us to ask ourselves: How do I respond when God speaks? What happens when God calls me deeper? Do my actions match my “yes”?

Prayer helps us hear God’s voice.

Fasting helps clear the noise.

Obedience is what happens next.

This passage invites us into honest self-reflection. How often have we said “yes” with our lips while our lives quietly say “no”? In a relationship with our Father, obedience will always speak louder than our intentions. We could spend hours praying, fasting, and seeking God, but if He speaks and we never respond, then what was it all for?

The good news is this: even though the first son initially said no, the fact that he obeyed in the end is what Jesus deemed vital. Although the Lord desires us to be obedient from the beginning in all areas of our lives, even when we don’t, He has grace for our disobedience. Jesus highlights this in verse 32, that even tax collectors and prostitutes were entering the kingdom of God ahead of the religious leaders, the difference being that they believed and responded to God. Nobody is above the commands of the Lord, and nobody is unworthy of the love of the Father.

This beautiful message gives us hope and holy expectancy in our lives. In the coming weeks, when God speaks in your life, which brother will you be? The one whose obedience ends with words, or the one who followed through?

Jesus doesn’t want performance. He wants a partnership. He wants lives that are willing to say, “Yes, Lord, with my words and my actions.”
