Between the Angels

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: What Mary Saw

“But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped downand looked into the tomb.12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.” John 20:11-12 (NKJV)

The story that God tells through the generations is infinitely fascinating. In the Scriptures, there are truths that He presents clearly, visible to anyone who passes by, easy to perceive, and learn quickly. But there are also less explicit depths, which require a more attentive and slower reading, a curious heart, and pure eyes. God left them for us on purpose. Being Love itself, God draws us into His beauty and poetry, leading us deeper to show us that all history belongs to Him and that His story is absolutely captivating.

One of these stories is the inexplicable and glorious event of the resurrection of Jesus.

John records that Mary Magdalene saw two angels dressed in white, seated where Jesus' body had been placed, one at the head and the other at the feet. John does not explain why they were positioned in this way. He simply describes what Mary saw.

The detail was not necessary to prove the resurrection, but John included it. Reading the resurrection accounts together - Matthew, Luke, Mark, and John - helps to properly contextualize this detail. The evangelists were not trying to make a precise count of angels. Matthew and Mark focused on one angel because only one of them spoke. Luke and John mentioned two, allowing the reader a broader view of the scene. These were not contradictions, but narrative choices. When the accounts are read side by side, a more complete picture emerges: there were two angels present, even if not all evangelists mentioned both.

What made John's account stand out was the posture and positioning of the angels. They were seated, not standing. And they were positioned at opposite ends of where Jesus' body had rested.

Readers shaped by the Scriptures of Israel may notice the specific arrangement: two celestial beings marking a sacred space. However, this time, the space between them is empty. What might this remind them of?

Mary does not interpret the symbolism. She simply hears her name being pronounced. The theological depth of that moment does not replace the personal encounter. In fact, it becomes one.

Did she understand what was being revealed? Did she see the fulfillment of the Gospel given to Abraham, Moses, hundreds of years before? Or was her heart still so heavy with sorrow from the previous days? Could she have so many tears streaming down her face and was there simply to fulfill a duty out of love? John doesn't say.

But the first witness of the complete work of redemption heard her name, and that was enough to make her recognize Him, the risen Lord.

And in that moment, theology became personal.

For Reflection:

  • Sometimes the most significant details are those that no one explains. John trusted that his readers would perceive them. What subtle details in Scripture have you missed? Ask God to slow down your Bible reading today.

About this Plan

Between the Angels

Two angels, one at the head and one at the feet, and the space between them empty. When Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb, she witnessed a scene that would resonate deeply for anyone formed by Israel's Scriptures. The mercy seat of the Ark was framed by two cherubim positioned the same way, marking the place where God promised to meet His people. Coincidence, or a story unfolding across centuries? This 5-day plan follows the thread from tabernacle to tomb, where sacred imagery becomes intimate reality, and the risen Christ still speaks, calling His people each by name.
