DAY 3 OF 12

Being God’s Molten Images

Which command would be harder to follow, “Don’t make cookies” or “Don’t make idols”?

If you’ve never felt the urge to carve a statue and bow to it, the second command might seem easy. No idols? No problem.

But try a different question: What has the most power to improve my life? Money? Property? Credentials? Maybe cookies? As today’s video explains, idols are more than statues; they’re things we think can give us access to something greater.

In the ancient world, if you believed the god Baal controlled fertility, then making and serving Baal idols was a way to secure rain, crops, or children. The idol was the gateway. Today, if we believe wealth provides a good life, we end up serving the small, tangible thing called money.

So God commands, “You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth” (Exod. 20:4). But there’s a twist: This includes images meant to represent God himself.

In Deuteronomy 4:15, God reminds Israel that they saw no “form” but only heard God when he spoke to them at Sinai. It’s a caution that we’ll distort our understanding of God if we try to contain him in any form or image. And actually, we shouldn’t need to, because God already made images of himself.

Genesis tells us that God formed humanity “in his image” (1:27). And in Deuteronomy 4:20, God says he brought Israel “out of the iron furnace” of Egypt (NASB), as if to say, “You living people are my molten images that I have already created.”

So this command speaks to how the limitless God cannot be contained in metal, wood, or any single image. We cannot serve lifeless things to experience the good life. But we can be God’s faithful, molten images by serving God alone, which means loving people the way he does.

The truest image of God isn’t a thing you bow to; it’s the neighbor you love.

Reflection Question:

  • What do you most often believe has the power to give you a better life? How can you shift your focus to serving God by loving people well instead of chasing things?
