Operating From the OverflowSample

The Busyness Trap: Operating from an Empty Cup
When busy becomes a distraction.
Have you ever been asked, “How are you doing?” and your response was:
“I’ve been busy… and I’m tired.”
You begin listing everything you have been doing, and just saying it out loud feels exhausting.
In Gospel of Luke 10:38–42, Jesus visits the home of two sisters: Martha and Mary.
The two women respond very differently to Jesus’ visit.
Martha becomes consumed with preparing and serving. She wants everything to be perfect for Jesus. Meanwhile, Mary sets aside her responsibilities and sits at Jesus’ feet, listening closely to His teaching.
As Martha continues working, frustration begins to build. She compares her efforts to what Mary is doing and becomes bitter that she is carrying the responsibilities alone. Instead of speaking directly to Mary, Martha brings her frustration to Jesus.
“Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” — Luke 10:40, NIV
Jesus responds with compassion and redirection:
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:41–42, NIV
Martha’s problem was not serving. Her service itself was not wrong.
The deeper issue was that her busyness became a distraction from being fully present with Jesus.
She was so focused on doing for Jesus that she missed simply being with Him.
How often do we do the same?
We fill our schedules, overcommit ourselves, and pour into everyone else until our spiritual cup runs empty. We become so consumed with responsibilities that we neglect the very relationship that fills us.
Jesus reminds Martha—and us—that intimacy with Him must come before constant productivity.
Being busy is not always the same as being fruitful.
Reflection
- Am I operating within my God-given assignment or simply staying busy?
- What distractions have been pulling me away from deepening my faith?
- Who or what do I need to say “no” to so I can say “yes” to spending more time with Jesus?
Come back for Day 3 as we talk about the importance of rest and learning how to pause without guilt.
