Operating From the OverflowSample

What God Assigned, God Sustains
"If the devil can't make you sin, he'll make you busy." — Corrie ten Boom
On Day 1, you received an invitation to take an inventory of your life and ask yourself:
"What has been draining my spiritual cup lately?"
Taking inventory of what you are doing is important because it helps reveal what may be keeping you from simply being with God. Sometimes we become so focused on responsibilities, commitments, and expectations that we lose sight of what God actually called us to do.
What are you taking on that has nothing to do with your values or God's purpose for your life?
Not every opportunity is your assignment.
Think back to your school days. Imagine your teacher telling you that not only were you responsible for your own homework, but you also had to complete everyone else's assignments—and they were all due tomorrow. You would probably think your teacher had lost her mind.
Yet many of us do exactly that in our daily lives. We carry responsibilities that were never ours to begin with. We take ownership of other people's problems, expectations, emotions, and outcomes. In the process, we become distracted from the unique purpose and assignment God has given us.
Hebrews 12:1(NIV) reminds us:
"Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."
Sometimes our exhaustion comes not from the race God assigned us to run, but from the extra weight we've picked up along the way.
Not every hindrance is sinful, but some things can still slow our spiritual growth.
Possible hindrances:
- Overcommitment
- People-pleasing
- Fear of failure
- Comparison
- Unhealthy habits
- Distractions and busyness
The writer of Hebrews also warns us about sin that "easily entangles." Sin is like a vine wrapping around a runner's legs. What begins as a small compromise can eventually restrict our freedom and hinder our progress.
Examples include:
- Unforgiveness
- Pride
- Bitterness
- Envy
- Persistent disobedience
- Doubt that causes us to ignore God's direction
The Christian life is not a sprint; it is a marathon requiring endurance, consistency, and faithfulness.
Perseverance means:
- Continuing when progress feels slow
- Trusting God during delays
- Remaining faithful when results aren't immediate
- Getting back up after setbacks
One reason we become overextended is because we struggle to say "no." We say "yes" to commitments, expectations, and obligations that don't align with what God is asking of us. Our boundaries become blurred, and we allow emotions, guilt, or the desire to please others to guide our decisions.
This is why understanding your values matters.
Your values reveal what is truly important to you. They help you recognize what aligns with your God-given purpose and what does not. They uncover what you are passionate about and provide a framework for making decisions that honor both God and the person He created you to be.
God has a unique calling, assignment, and path for each person.
Not every opportunity is your assignment.
Not every burden is yours to carry.
Not every race is yours to run.
When we focus on the race God has marked out for us, we discover a powerful truth:
What God assigns, God sustains.
The same God who calls you is the God who equips you, strengthens you, and provides what you need to fulfill His purpose.
