Never Alone

DAY 1 OF 7

The Power of the Pit Crew

Have you ever watched a professional car race?

The speed. The cornering.

The rush.

My favorite part is the pits, as the team jumps into action and within seconds, pumps a full tank of gas and swaps four new tires. The race is often won or lost in the pits.

But the pits are more than that. They show us that it’s not just a one-man race, but rather an entire team that surrounds and supports the driver so he is not alone.

Loneliness is an uncomfortable word for men.

The first “not good” moment in Creation was when God saw that Adam was alone (Genesis 2:18).* Loneliness was a concern for God right from the beginning.

Now, God’s solution was to give him Eve (Genesis 2:22). And that sure helped.

But after sin entered the world in Genesis 3, loneliness seemed to take on new forms, creating more concerns.

In Ecclesiastes 4, Solomon writes about seeing a “man all alone; (with) neither son nor brother” (Ecclesiastes 4:8).

Why?

Because the man had spent his life pursuing money rather than relationships. When this man reflected on his life, he concluded that it was all “meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 4:8).

And what was Solomon’s answer to this?

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

In his wisdom, Solomon knew that men need other men around them.

But that’s sometimes easier said than done.

Over the next week, we will look into what the Bible says about loneliness and see the hope Jesus offers men.

My challenge to you:

Find your pit crew.

Ask a friend to join you in these devotionals this week. It’s the first step to overcoming your loneliness.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You see me in my loneliness. Help me to hear Your word this week and know Your hope. Amen

Reflection: Who is in your "pit crew"? Reach out to them and ask them to do this week’s devotionals with you.

* Unless otherwise stated, all biblical references will be taken from the New International Version (NIV).
