I Will Not Betray My Heart

DAY 6 OF 7

A COSTLY HEART

In this story, David counts how many soldiers he has in his army in order to know the exact number of his strength. Seems reasonable, right—to know all the data on your own army? The only problem was that God fought for Israel, and the Lord was insulted at the idea that David— after continually experiencing first hand God’s deliverance—was now deluded about God’s hand in the whole matter of his becoming kind, and was now relying on his own strength.

God’s judgment came in the form of an angel tearing through the nation and striking 70,000 people dead. When David repented, God ordered the angel to stop, who had worked his way up to the threshing floor of a man named Araunah. Seeing the angel’s location on Araunah’s plot of land, the prophet Gad told David to go and build an altar to the Lord right there on that spot where the angel had stayed his hand.

Araunah sees David and his men coming to his threshing floor and asks David what’s up, to which David replies, “I want to buy your threshing floor to build an altar to the Lord here.” Araunah refuses payment and desires to give the land to David, but David refuses the free land for the altar, saying, “No, I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord that cost me nothing.” This location on Mt. Moriah (a place of great personal sacrifice—the same location where Abraham offers up Isaac) will be the future spot where Solomon builds the temple.

Like the woman who anointed Jesus’s feet with the very best that she had, David had a revelation of who God is, and that nothing is ever wasted in worship. For David, worship should always be costly—people who have a glimpse of Jesus never worship for “free”.

What can you offer to God that is costly? Maybe it’s time, or maybe it’s your words!

PRAYER
Lord—help us to see Jesus! We want to worship in spirit and in truth! Let our lives adore you— with everything that we have—giving worship that is fitting for the King of Heaven, in Jesus' Name!

About this Plan

I Will Not Betray My Heart

"Heart For The House" is an annual, sacrificial offering over and above normal tithes and offerings at Hillsong NYC. Every year, this single weekend marks a pivotal and miraculous step forward in the life of our church. By intentionally preparing and selflessly giving, our church is able to extend our reach and expand our influence into realms that are often left overlooked. Our prayer is that you would consider your part to play as we endeavor to practically equip our local church to better serve our city, our home, and our world. Our heart is for freedom. Our heart if for people. Our heart is for this house. And we will not betray our heart. Join us over the next seven days in this special devotional, as we learn more of God's heart for us, and for His Church. And as we prepare to sow generously to see His kingdom take ground like never before.
