ARAW 14 NG 29

Are you afraid of the dark? Most kids are. They fear more than ever when lightning strikes in a stormy night. Yet soon they become unafraid of the dark. As they grow old, they get used to it. But ironic as it is, some people have become fearful not of darkness but of the light.

People have a way of hiding the truth about who they are. They do this because they are afraid they might be judged or exposed. Or they might be reproved or hurt.

When Jesus was on earth, He dared the self-righteous Pharisees and scribes to bring to light the motives behind what they do. He reproved them and made clear to them what it means to be righteous. (Matthew 23)

No one can hide from God what his true color is. He knows if a person plays hypocrite. We cannot trick Him.

God’s ways oppose that of the world and vice versa. God wants the inside of a cup clean. Man likes a clean coating. So there is no wonder if people seek to hide their weaknesses by doing good deeds. They mask their flaws by doing generous acts. They give in to others’ wishes just to hide the evil they do. And so they deceive themselves as well.

What God cares about and looks at is our inner being. He looks at our heart. He does not want it to be corrupted by deceit. That is why He gave this warning. “Love not the world neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (1 John 2:15-16)

God wants us to be whole not just outside but also inside. And if we are whole or clean inside, we therefore have nothing to fear. It means that we have come to the real light.

Jesus came as the real light of the world. He exposed what is in the dark. He exposed sin. And He said, “Whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” (John 12:46)

Are you afraid of the light? You should not be. For if you have acknowledged that you are a sinner and you have received Jesus in your heart, you will overcome the world’s rejection and understand its hypocrisy.

Remember this. “…Everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” (John 3:20-21)

Reflection:
1. Have you committed sins that you find hard to confess before God? Do you have attitudes that you find hard to change? What do these further do to you?
2. Think of ways on how you can be more transparent to God and in your dealings with people. Jot them down.

Light exposes what is in the dark and condemns its wicked schemes.

God uses our questions to make us know Him. I am convinced that none of the wisdom of this world could provide adequate answers to our questions. I believe that God reveals to us a better way of finding solutions to our problems and hope for our disquieted spirit. They are all ours for the asking. And they are revealed in the Bible, the Word of God. Go! Find the answers to your questions. And do it straight from the Word!
