Pride is the root of sin if we will trace the entrance of sin in the heavenly realm. At the time that God has not yet created the earth, pride began to ruin the heavens. Lucifer, the angel called son of the morning, prompted a revolt there. He was able to persuade one third of the multitude of angels to rebel against God. Thus he and the angels with him fell from heaven.
Prophet Isaiah wrote, How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart; I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the pit. (Isaiah 14:12-15)
The book of Ezekiel tells another account. Take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God: You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the Garden of God; every precious stone was your covering; the sardius, topaz, and diamond; beryl, onyx, and jasper; sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.
You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.
By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub from the midst of the fiery stones. Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, that they might gaze at you.
You defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading. Therefore I brought fire from your midst; it devoured you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all who saw you. All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you. You have become a horror, and shall be no more forever. (Ezekiel 28:12-19)
Lucifer was named Satan after his fall. He adored his own beauty. He worshiped himself and desired to be worshiped by all Gods creation as well. His five I will statements revealed that he envied God. (Isaiah 14:12-15)
Thus he wanted to unseat God. He wanted to sit on His throne and to place it beyond galaxies. He wanted to break away from the Most Highs rule. He wanted to have Gods glory for himself. But these can never happen. No. Not in his dreams. So God brought him low.
This biblical account on Satans fall will always remind us that the same fate will happen to the proud. There are a lot of rulers who have proudly ruled but have fallen at a time they did not expect.
Pride destroys at its best. It is evil. It can never please God.
And God did not only bring Satan low. He also had prepared him a furnace of fire where he would be condemned forever. (Matthew 25:41)
Satan is bound to hell. He has no room to repent. But he makes sure he will not be sent to his doom alone. He takes double time to bring more people with him to hell. And he knows that people do not need to be so wicked to be sent there. He just needs to entice them with the root of all sins, which is pride.
Let us guard ourselves. For those who walk in pride, God is able to put down. (Daniel 4:37)
The book of Proverbs tells us, Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. It further says, A mans pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor. (Proverbs 16:18; 29:23)
Reflection:
1. Was there a moment that you were brought low? What lessons did you learn from it?
2. How should you fight pride?
Pride is like a bottomless pit.

God uses our questions to make us know Him. I am convinced that none of the wisdom of this world could provide adequate answers to our questions. I believe that God reveals to us a better way of finding solutions to our problems and hope for our disquieted spirit. They are all ours for the asking. And they are revealed in the Bible, the Word of God. Go! Find the answers to your questions. And do it straight from the Word!
