Christmas in Mexico

In Mexico, children reenact Joseph and Mary’s journey into Bethlehem and the couple’s search for lodging. Las Posadas is a celebration that runs from December 16 until December 24 in Mexico. Las Posadas means “lodging” and kids enjoy the nightly dramatization of the Joseph and Mary looking for a place to stay.

Each child is given a board that is decorated with clay figures of Mary and Joseph. They go house to house and sing a song at each home. At each home, the homeowner tells them there is no room there and asks them to leave. Finally at the last home, the children are told that there is room and they are able to go into the house and celebrate! Oftentimes, these celebrations include a star-shaped piñata full of candy and fruit.

The tradition continues each evening for 9 days. On the final night which is Christmas Eve, shepherds and a manger are added to the board. When the children arrive at the correct house for that day, baby Jesus is added into the manger. The families then eat a special Christmas meal and go to church.

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, He is asking us to make room for Him. So often, we’re tempted to say, “There is no room for you in this busy season, Jesus.” In a sense, our hearts are flashing “No Vacancy.” So, how do we make room for Him? Here are some ideas.

  • We encourage you this Christmas season to slow down. We know it’s difficult, especially in this season. It requires intentionality. Take a day or even an hour and spend it with your Savior. Welcome Jesus into your life this Christmas.
  • Read the account of Jesus’ birth with your kids several times this Christmas season. Talking and discussing the true meaning of Christmas helps us remember the real reason we’re celebrating.
  • Share Christmas joy with those who aren’t as fortunate this holiday. Brainstorm a family project and then put action behind it. What a great way to share God’s love!

Family Activity Idea: Christmas caroling is a great way to share the joy of Jesus’ birth to your neighborhood. Make cookies or Christmas cards for your neighbors and deliver them with a song about Jesus’ birth.
