"Ruth"
Sometimes we as women allow our families to define us. It is easy to get caught up in family traditions, customs, and even religions. However, our “Bad Girl” for the day left her land and people to ultimately follow God.
Some people read the book of Ruth and wonder how she could be included in a list of “Bad Girls”. To answer that question I will attempt to provide some background information on the culture and the time period of this story.
The love story we find in the book of Ruth points to the greater love story of Jesus Christ. This story occurs during the Judges period. A famine hits Bethlehem so Naomi and her family leave and travel to Moab. Moab was an ungodly land. The Moabite culture existed due to the incest that occurred between Lot and his daughter. The land was known for its sexual immorality and even child sacrifice. This is what Ruth grew up around and primarily all she knew until meeting Naomi’s family.
Despite the consequence of leaving her home Ruth makes the following statement, “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Who knows how old Ruth was when she made this decision, but it is evident, especially once she enters the land of Bethlehem that those words were spoken with conviction.
Some people are raised thinking they’ll carry the failures and mistakes of their family. However, Jesus wrecked this way of thinking when he went to the cross. Because of his sacrifice you are accepted as sons and daughters of God. Isn’t that amazing? God is your Heavenly Father. Believe in and imitate him and the distorted image of your former life will fade away.
