Grow Up

I grew up as a Christian and thought I had a fair old handle on God, Jesus and all that stuff. Fast forward to my 30s (I’m 42 now) and, gulp, I realised just how immature was my faith, wisdom and knowledge.

During the past few years, one of the biggest discoveries I have made as a Christian isn’t just about how my own faith needs cultivation and care. I realised how Christian maturity is a team sport, not a solo trek.

Slowly read the Romans 15 passage and try to tell yourself it’s only about you, and you alone. I love how Romans 15 reveals that a purpose of the part of the Scriptures we call the Old Testament is to guide us now—a pointer to God’s plan for developing his people across the ages.

And as we grow through endurance and encouragement, the aim is a joint project—that all of us would form one mind and voice to glorify God, just as Jesus did. Talk about a beautiful collective goal!

QUESTION: When does the Old Testament help you to endure and progress in your Christian faith?

The Christian faith shares this element of maturing and developing. A steady yet sometimes overlooked part of our Christian faith is “growing up” – and it’s not just a solo pursuit. Christians are called to help each other in maturity.
