Resolve to Keep Your Mouth Clean

The second example involves keeping your mouth clean.

Oops. I may have just lost some of you. I can hear some of you now, “Oh, Mylanta, Cheri! Who do you think I am? I can’t do that!”

Don’t worry.

This particular resolution is blasting me in the face, too. But before you put down your device and find something more pleasant to read let’s ponder the possibilities.

Do we want to develop a passion to pursue the Lord Jesus like we’ve never encountered? Do we desire the kind of passion that makes us wonder who that woman in the mirror is? Because the woman in the reflection would NOT have handled that difficulty, that situation or that ugly comment this way!

I am begging you. Please! Think about the possibilities as you investigate God’s Word:

“Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find nothing.” Psalm 17:3

Wait! The God of the universe will find nothing? Seriously? What kind of person can make such a bold statement?

The one who has made a resolution to keep his mouth clean.

“I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.” Psalm 17:3

What if we determined to emulate the Psalmist in this one action? Can you even imagine?

No, I cannot!

This resolution doesn’t mean we would never relapse or that we can kiss our mouth problems good-bye forever.

James communicates the destructive power we carry around on our faces. But think about it. What would it look like in your life for this next season of life, or for heaven’s sakes, the next week, to resolve with your mouth in these areas?

  • To refrain from hateful comments,
  • To refuse to participate in the gossip,
  • To only tell the truth, no matter the cost,
  • To stop speaking when we got angry– before we said something unkind?

Ponder the ramifications! This resolution alone could:

  • Alter the current course of negative relationships,
  • Further the course of good ones,
  • Produce healing rather than hurt,
  • Improve our character, and
  • Provide a worthy example for those within our spheres of influence. Not to mention the double-takes we will get!

Consider resolving, like our Psalmist, to keep your mouth clean, for the next twenty-four hours. Maybe you could focus on one of the areas listed.

Resolve to take one more step.

That’s what becoming thirsty is all about.
